corto.alto is the project of Glasgow multi-instrumentalist, composer and producer Liam Shortall (trombone, bass, effects); live band includes Graham Costello (drums) and Fergus McCreadie (keys). The name is a Spanish pun on his surname (corto.alto = short.tall). "NOBLEHILL" (feat. Jacob Alon) (3:50) is the closing track (15) on SOME SMALL FORTUNE, released 4 September 2026 on Ninja Tune — corto.alto's debut for the label. It was the album's final preview single, released 18 August 2026 with fellow Scottish vocalist Jacob Alon. The album features Mick Jenkins, anaiis, Oscar Jerome, Vector, BINA., Terra Kin and Eriff alongside Shortall's long-time Glaswegian band. Shortall's debut album Bad with Names was shortlisted for the 2024 Mercury Prize for Album of the Year. corto.alto won Scottish Jazz Awards Best Band in 2020 and 2023; Shortall won the 2021 Scottish Awards for New Music innovation-in-jazz award. Shortall says the record became "dedicated to memory, nostalgia and being grateful for what I have" after his parents moved out of the family home and he found old family photos.
