Joy Division — Love Will Tear Us Apart

Played: 2026-07-02 (Segment 5 — Moment in History) (TikTok) (moment in history)

The 1980 single, released weeks after Ian Curtis's death. Opens the history segment; the gravestone story is the post-show TikTok.

Moment in History: On 2 July 2008, Ian Curtis's memorial gravestone — inscribed 'Ian Curtis 18-5-80' and the words 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' — was stolen from Macclesfield Cemetery. Curtis had severe epilepsy triggerable by percussion and flashing lights, had decided to leave the band amid severe mood swings caused partly by his medication, and died by suicide in 1980 aged 23, weeks before the single's release.
TikTok angle: On this exact date in 2008, someone stole Ian Curtis's gravestone — carved with the song's title. He died in 1980 aged 23, weeks before the single came out.
