MDC are a band from Austin, Texas (later San Francisco, currently Portland, Oregon), formed 1979 as The Stains; frontman Dave Dictor. The acronym's meaning changed over the years — most frequently Millions of Dead Cops. "John Wayne Was a Nazi" (2:01) is track 7 (side one closer) on Millions of Dead Cops, lyrics by Dictor and Al Schvitz, music by Ron Posner. The album was self-released February 1982, reissued/remixed later that year on R Radical Records with help from Alternative Tentacles (Jello Biafra's label); recorded December 1981 in Houston, Texas, produced by Geza X. The song first appeared as a 7" single by the band under their original name The Stains on R Radical Records in 1980, then as MDC in 1981, backed with "Born to Die". Kurt Cobain listed Millions of Dead Cops in his top 50 albums of all time. The band reissued the original 1982 mix on Record Store Day 2014 through Beer City Records; the 1988 Twisted Chords reissue added 13 bonus tracks including both sides of the "John Wayne Was a Nazi" single. Dictor said in a 2025 interview that the song "is still sadly relevant today".
TikTok angle: A 1982 hardcore punk track naming and shaming a Hollywood icon as a fascist — and the band recorded it in Houston while the cowpunk scene around them was still finding its feet. "Does this still hit?" is the whole scroll-stopper.
