Written as a quiet protest against the 2003 invasion of Iraq, the piece anchors Richter's anti-war album The Blue Notebooks (2004). Scored for a string quintet on a hypnotic ground-bass, an elegiac violin melody climbs and then dissolves. Its palindromic, minimalist structure in B-flat minor has made it one of the most licensed pieces of contemporary classical music, used in films and TV from Shutter Island and Stranger Than Fiction to Arrival, The Last of Us, and The Handmaid's Tale. Its inclusion in Arrival actually rendered that film ineligible for the Academy Award for Best Original Score.
TikTok angle: A protest against the Iraq war from 2004 that has become one of the most licensed pieces of music ever, and its use in Arrival disqualified that film from an Oscar.
