The Avalanches — Blue Shadows

"Blue Shadows" is a new single from The Avalanches featuring Yeah Yeah Yeahs frontwoman Karen O, released ~23 July 2026. It's built around a prominent sample of "Shadows From Nowhere" (1983) by Blue Gas — the Italo-disco alias of Italian composer Celso Valli. Robbie Chater of The Avalanches included the track in a selection of song ideas he sent to Karen O, who said: "When Robbie sent me 'Blue Shadows' I jumped at the chance to collaborate." She described The Avalanches' 2020 album We Will Always Love You as "a gift to humanity." Chater called the song "achingly forlorn" — "so achingly forlorn it sounds like some people just have access to a higher plane." The Daily Music Report described it as a dreamy, sample-driven single built on an Italo-inspired groove, with the reflective question "Does anybody know how to mend a broken heart?"
